WILD - Metal Detecting
Date: 08/27/2022 4:00 PM - 08/27/2022 5:30 PM
Event Details
Any treasure hunters in the audience? What do you do when Cheyenne Bottoms pools dry up?
From 1943-1947, 6,800 acres of Cheyenne Bottoms was leased by the Army and known as the Great Bend Air-to-Ground Gunnery Range. The beginning of WWII is what prompted the Army to obtain this piece of land for practice. The area was used as a bombing range, rifle and machine gun range, and a chemical weapons training area. The .50 caliber shells you see in the image were from machine guns likely shot out of a B-25 or B-29.
You can explore non refuge areas for your own historical remnants.
On August 27, our WILD activity will be to treasure hunt one of the dry pools. I have one metal detector (and honestly these 4 were spotted without hearing any beeps), but if you have access to a metal detector bring one along.
We are tentatively setting the time for 4pm, but we'll see what type of heat late August has in store for us!
WILD is a monthly program for school-age youth and their families. The goal is to get kids outside exploring nature and off of their screens! This is a free activity, and no registration is required, but please call 1-877-243-9268 with any questions.
