Event Details
The Nature Book Club starts off 2022 with two critically acclaimed books, “World of Wonders” by Aimee Nezhukumatathil and “The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben. Book discussions will take place at the Great Bend Public Library (GBPL), with “World of Wonders” book discussion, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 8., and “The Hidden Life of Trees” at 7 p.m. on April 12. Each book will be available at GBPL in paper, or digitally in Hoopla and Libby.
The complete title of Nezhukumatathil’s book gives a clue as to what one finds inside, “World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks and Other Astonishments”. Each chapter captures a moment centered around a different creature and natural phenomenon, charting the reverberations of the lived experience it evokes, be it family, identity, or the notion of belonging. As a child, Nezhukumatathil lived in Kansas, Arizona, New York, and Ohio. No matter where she was transplanted, she was able to turn to the world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.
“The species that capture her attention have superpowers, or functions, that have helped her. …Anyone who ever felt small and shy, like they didn’t quite fit in, will find reflection in these thoughtful stories,” James Rebanks, New York Times book review.
Warm, lyrical and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, “World of Wonders” is a book of sustenance and joy.
In the same vein, the complete title of “The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate – Discoveries from a Secret World”, speaks of the forest as a living being. Filled with extensive information about the true lives of trees in an easy, joyful writing style, it is an illuminating account of the forest and the science that shows us how trees communicate and live in social networks. After reading this book, a walk in the woods will never be the same again. It is a New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal Bestseller.
