July 1 - Fly Tying with Lynn Davignon, KDWPT Region 1 Fisheries Supervisor
Fly fishing, the "quiet sport", is gaining in popularity across the country, even here on the prairie. And to those who've been at it a while, the desire to catch fish with their own forms of terminal tackle takes the quiet sport a step further with learning to tie their own flies.
Fly tying is like any other activity, the more you do it, the better you become. It can be simple and uncomplicated in terms of the materials used and how you assemble them. Even some of the simplest flies will catch fish.
On the other hand, it can be an advanced art form, as the most experienced tyers will spend hours creating a single pattern to mimic a realistic critter to fool sportfish.
3pm - Elementary Fly-Tying Program
In this session for the younger participants, Lynn will discuss the why's and how's of beginner fly tying. Lynn will explain a short list of the basic materials used, the tools used and how to use them, and where to explore the unlimited resources available to learn more about fly tying. Most examples will involve basic flies that can be used to catch fish locally. This session will run one to 1.5 hours.
6pm - Middle School through Adult Program
With older participants, some who may be more advanced in the sport of fishing in general, discussion on the basics of creating flies, the various types of flies and how and when to use what while fishing. Lynn will discuss more in-depth about materials and tools used to tie with. There'll be discussion about the advanced forms of tying, to help the students make the connection between tying and fly fishing. This session could easily go two hours.
