Recent Bird Sightings-March 17

Spring Migration is here.  After several weeks of cold, winter weather, we’ve seen some great movement of birds over the last week of milder weather.  That activity will only increase over the next few weeks. Most know that our peak Spring migration occurs from the last 2 weeks of April through the first 2 weeks of May. We received some more rain this past week.  This rain only adds to the already high water levels […]

Recent Bird Sightings-Feb 18

We are still in Winter birding mode; however, it seems as though we may be seeing some signs of Spring and bird movements. Much of the bird activity this time of year is dependent on the availability of open water, which can change from day to day. Rains this past Fall and Winter have filled all the pools at Cheyenne Bottoms, and water levels are considered high for the entire area.  KDWPT staff have been […]

Recent Bird Sightings-Oct 5

Fall birding is in full swing, and new migrants are showing up regularly with each new weather front. As with most Fall migrations, because it is extended out over several months, birding can be hit and miss, depending on what the weather has pushed out or brought in. Rains in early September and good moist soil plant production have created some excellent marsh conditions.  Vegetation is relatively high in some areas, so one problem is […]

Recent Bird Sightings-Aug 3

Late summer birding dominates, with early migrants showing up. We have started to see Fall migrants returning from the north for a couple weeks now.  Birding is great right now, but is mostly dependent on diminishing water levels at Cheyenne Bottoms.  Several of the pools at Cheyenne Bottoms are dry, and other pools are quite shallow.  Those that do have water are prime habitat for returning shorebirds and waders. A shorebird survey conducted by Robert […]

Recent Bird Sightings-May 30

Spring Migration is winding down some, but not over yet. Bird sightings seem to vary with time of day and water conditions across the area.  Mornings and evenings are seeing the best bird activity as opposed to during the middle of the day.  Many of the public pools at Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area (Pools 2, 3a, 3b, 4a, and 4b) are being dewatered in order for KDWPT staff to conduct vegetation and habitat management this […]

Recent Bird Sightings-April 23

Spring Migration is in full swing! Bird sightings continue to change almost daily and with the weather and water conditions right now at Cheyenne Bottoms.   Plan to make multiple trips to the wetlands this Spring, as it is fun to see the bird diversity change from day to day as new birds arrive throughout the next couple months. Shorebird numbers and diversity is changing most drastically right now.  We are entering the peak 2-3 weeks […]
