Gray Copper

Gray Copper

A Gray Copper (Lycaena dione) visited the butterfly garden at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. It posed nicely on an indian blanket flower (Gaillardia pulchella), probably relieved to be out of the howling wind for the moment.  Preferred habitat for this type of butterfly includes wetland edges, moist meadows and disturbed areas where dock (Rumex spp.) grows. Dock is the larval host plant for Gray Coppers and adults feed on milkweeds, clover, and alfalfa.
