December 18 is a great day to spend at Cheyenne Bottoms counting birds.  Even though the wetlands are dry, winter birds are still plentiful.  Whether you are a novice or an expert birder, you will enjoy some time outdoors with other birders as we perform our annual Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count.

Christmas Bird Counts have been going on in the U.S. for over 100 years.  It is the longest running Citizen Science program in the world.  Every year the Christmas Bird Counts add valuable longterm information to the pool of knowledge availble for scientists.  Scientists can use the information from Christmas Bird Counts to evaluate trends in bird populations or to document rare species that might show up in particular areas.

If you are interested in participating in this year’s Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count, meet at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center on Tuesday, December 18 at 8:00 a.m.  From there we will divide into groups and cover designated areas of the count circle.  A lunch will be provided to participants.  If you have questions or would like to let us know you are coming, please call the KWEC at 877-243-9268.
